This photo was taken this morning, capturing the last sunrise in Maine of 2010. In the corner you can see the Five Islands Lobster house, one of the most popular summer destinations situated on the public pier - which is a year-round hub for lobstering.

I was walking along the beach at Reid State Park earlier this month and noticed this piece of rope washed ashore...a knot that was cut - from a lobster boat most likely. It makes you wonder what kind of story it has to tell.

This photo is of one of the several footpaths that lead to Popham Beach, a popular and beautiful summer destination here in Maine. This particular path here is adjacent to Fort Popham, and you can see the island of Georgetown on the horizon line.

The autumn light has a unique way to illuminate the fallen leaves - bright and often with a yellow or red hue. The evening sun filtered by passing clouds can give you a soft golden light that is only amplified by the colorful foliage it passes through.

Each photo is cropped differently so the size will vary, but a small photo would be in the 8 x 12 range, medium 12 x 18, and the large 16 x 24. Again these are just estimates – the image may be a few inches longer or shorter depending on the photo and I would be happy to give you an exact print size before purchase. These photos are printed on Kodak archival paper.

Late Thursday evening I decided to capture the colorful leaves that recently fell due to several passing rain showers. I found a deserted island road and photographed this scene using only the moonlight, diffused by a thin layer of clouds.

After Hurricane Earl passed through this Labor Day weekend, the waves at Reid State Park were incredible. This secluded portion of Mile Beach is a unique place to watch the tide roll in and out as it spills over the rocks and quickly fills up this small cove.

I found this timeless spot where the water meets the tall grassy hills of Reid State Park. The sun was setting and there was a misty fog low to the ground that reflected the sunlight in a stunning way. The sun, filtered by the fog, created a unique color that is typical of late summer in Maine.

I visited the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens again recently, which has seen an entire transformation since last summer. The addition of the new Children's Garden is phenomenal and has made it a destination for the entire family. My favorite part about the gardens is the Shoreland Trails which travel along the banks of the Sheepscot River - a deeply wooded environment that is secluded and green. I plan to visit the gardens again soon to photograph the autumn foliage in October.

Doubling Point Light in Arrowsic, Maine is a rare and inviting find along the coast. Located only a few minutes south of Bath, this lighthouse is hidden away in the forest at the end of a long dirt road. This location feels much more like a coastal nature preserve rather than the public grounds of a lighthouse as you are thrown into the middle of the thick forest that comprises this peninsula. Tourists and other visitors have been non-existent during my visits here which tells me that this lighthouse is one of the few lesser-known destinations of the Midcoast region.

It was a memorable day on Bailey Island on July 11th as two very special people - Dave and Marcia - renewed their vows at the Log Cabin Inn. They were kind enough to allow me to photograph their event.

Surrounded by friends and family from near and far, you could certainly feel the love and joy everyone had for them. Alicia Snow performed the ceremony on the balcony - Marcia looked stunning and Dave was clearly the proud husband. After so many years together, it's both rare and reassuring to find a couple as much in love as these two. Congratulations!

This stunning Sandpiper was taken at Reid State Park on the Half Mile Beach. These birds frequent the park and its beaches during the evening hours, where you can often see them standing on top of the rocks calling for their friends to join.

Todd's Landing is semi-public boat launch located at the southernmost tip of Robinhood Cove. Restricted only to residents of Georgetown, this peaceful location offers boaters a relaxing and protected sail up to the Robinhood Cove Marina. From there, you can either drop anchor or sail around the Sheepscot and visit Five Islands, Southport Island, or even Boothbay Harbor, which are all a short sail away.

On the east coast of Georgetown is Five Islands, located at the end of Rte. 127. Here you can sit for hours, watching the tide bring in many fishing vessels and wildlife.

Also located here is the Five Island Lobster Company, a fantastic place to get some of the freshest lobster in Maine.

I found these little fledglings not far from my house - one stayed sleeping in its nest while the other, more energetic sibling traveled out to the edge of the pine tree. Soon after, they hopped out of the tree and were taking test flights while both parents watched from afar, who chased a red-tailed squirrel away when he got too close. By this morning, both had flown off but I suspect that they are still close by.

In honor of Memorial Day, I'm posting this photo I took last week as I was leaving the Log Cabin Inn. Bailey Island is a place of surreal sunsets which no words could ever describe perfectly.

The sky opened up for a beautiful sunset last evening on the pier at Potts Harbor. This photograph was taken for someone very far away, yet very near to me.

Directly across the Merriconeag Sound from Bailey Island is Harpswell Neck, another one of the many small islands here in Casco Bay. You'll often see the view of Harpswell Neck from Bailey Island in several of my photos. Just before you reach the public boat launch and beach there, there's a wonderful public pier facing west, making it an ideal location for sunset images.

Yesterday afternoon became quite cloudy, which is always a gamble for sunset photography. Clouds make for the most interesting and beautiful sunsets as they can bring out unusual and vibrant colours, as well as create stunning patterns in the sky. However, sometimes the clouds don't quite manage to break up as expected, and instead blanket a sunset rather than complimenting it.

Although clouds before sunset are always a gamble, I had a feeling that they would break up, so I decided to take the half-hour drive over to Harpswell Neck and see how the clouds would react. As I was driving, I could see the clouds slowly burning off towards the horizon, which was the best thing I could hope for.

My timing was perfect as I arrived to the beach - which is what I planned on photographing...but just before I reached the beach, I caught out of the corner of my eye a long pier and decided to turn around and investigate that instead. To my Irish luck and surprise, the pier was marked "PUBLIC" so I knew I could photograph it.

By the time I set up my camera and lens, the show I received was astounding. Four seagulls decided to perch themselves on the railing, as if they knew I was there and wanted to be in the picture. The boats in the left-hand side of the photo epitomizes a summer in Harpswell, where you can watch both fishing vessels and leisure boats share the waters during the golden hours.

This photo represents my vision of the perfect summer in Maine.

The western coast of Bailey Island along Merriconeag Sound is a place I visit often. The sunsets behind Harpswell Neck create the perfect amount of golden light. When combined with the endless compositions of this coastal community, one could spend an entire lifetime on the island and not photograph every show of artistry.

Mackerel Cove is a spot on Bailey Island that I often return to, and you can see why. The photo opportunities are plentiful, but it's also a fantastic location just to visit. It's a place void of modern commercial activity where you can watch a true coastal Maine fishing community.

Located at the southernmost tip of Bailey Island, Land's End is literally the end of the land, as Rte. 24 dead-ends at this small beach. Although you start your journey down from Brunswick, you actually end up as south as the Falmouth area and can often see large ships sailing in and out of Portland Harbor.

I've been planning this shot for a while as I drive by it often. This is a floating dock with lobster crates stacked up high, located right off the bridge between Orr's Island and mainland Harpswell. I purposefully overexposed the water to get that smooth, white surface.

Reid State Park in Georgetown is a must visit, an absolutely breathtaking location. I went with my friend Nina who has quite the critical eye, and she gave her utmost praise of the area.

When you enter Reid State Park, you are greeted with a windy road encompassed by pine trees that eventually fade into an endless marsh filled with egrets and herons. Once through, you reach the final destination of several sandy beaches free of pebbles that are a rare find for coastal Maine.

During the torrential and never ending rains this past summer, I visited Maple Juice Cove as I often do. The silence was heavy and deafening with only the rare interruption of seagulls crying. These inviting adirondacks were placed here by an unknown local so that others can sit and enjoy watching the tide fluctuate below.

I went down to the public landing in Friendship last week and got some stellar shots, this being one of them. Friendship is a working fisherman's town, so a lot of activity at the landing year 'round is to be expected. The harbor was filled with anchored fishing boats and made for great photo opportunities.

I was up in Camden today and saw a cormorant drying it's wings. Apparently they lack the naturally waterproof feathers that other sea birds have, thus needing to air dry their wings by holding them out like this.

A place that I often return to, Maple Juice Cove, is hauntingly familiar to me. Growing up in Boston, I would frequently imagine a desolate land that was tranquil and void of modern society. When I moved to Cushing, I found that place, which is why I plan on remaining in this area for years to come.

My wonderful mom, pictured above, created a new website back in May for those who enjoy writing about love: A Victorian Affair. She also has a blog located here.You can read letters and poems that people have submitted anonymously, or if you feel inclined, you can write one of your own and email it to her. She's very happy with the response already received, and she is so thankful for each submission as it is everyday people opening up to her in the deepest way.

I took this photo while on a shoot at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. These kayakers are paddling towards the ocean on the Sheepscot River, which runs along the west side of the Gardens. None of them noticed me, although it was quite wooded in the area I was in. It's funny to think about how these people have no idea that their photo is now on my blog and website, but you never know if they'll make their way to this someday.

A similar thing happened to me not too long ago during the winter. I took this photo in December of last year, and not even two months later the owner of the house on the horizon emailed me and said she would like to buy a print for her family. When you take a moment to think about it, the chance of that happening is pretty unlikely. She was particularly happy with the fact that I decided to make this image the background for my business card, which is pictured below.

Horticulture - Spring 2009

I've noticed that I have not posted many of my random horticultural shots as of yet, so I figured it would be best to group them all into one posting. A few of these were taken in Vermont, but most were in Midcoast Maine. Since I work on such a small scale in most of my horticultural shots however, the location never really seems to matter.

The best thing about horticulture photography on the macro level is that you can capture a beautiful photo in the most unattractive environment. In a ditch off the interstate, between the cracks of a sidewalk, in a patch of dead leaves...a beautiful photo can present itself anywhere. Of course, summer time in coastal Maine is hardly a place where stunning photos are hard to find.

This shot, believe it or not, is of a harvest moon rising from behind the pines, taken at about 10:00pm. With the orange hue, you would think you're looking at a sunset rather than a moonrise.

An all-too-familiar scene in Midcoast Maine.

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens

One of the most tranquil locations in Midcoast Maine is the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay. The Garden is about 250 acres right on the Sheepscot River and incorporates winding walking trails, outdoor artwork, and not-so-native plants that work harmoniously with the existing mossy hardwoods and towering pines that are undoubtedly much older than any of us.

Another thing that makes the Gardens unique is their waterfront gazebo, pictured above. Here you can overlook the Sheepscot River while the kayakers paddle by, with the only sounds being their affable voices in the distance and the songs of birds.

Damariscove Island

This shot was taken on Southport Island, which is accessible by bridge from Boothbay Harbor. The view is facing east towards Damariscove Island, which is uninhabited as far as I know. This building must be the Coast Guard station since it has a lookout tower. At first I thought it was a lighthouse, but upon further investigation, there are no lighthouses out that way.

Boothbay Harbor is not only the most picturesque coastal town I've visited so far, but also a spectacular vacation spot that is reminiscent of old coastal Maine. Here in Midcoast Maine you can sail right up to a waterfront restaurant and dine on the freshest lobster with both the locals and vacationers alike. If you don't know where I'm talking about by now, well then you need to plan a trip to Boothbay Harbor. The Lobster Dock has, hands down, the freshest seafood I've had the privilege of eating, with very generous portions.

Pemaquid Point Light

Pemaquid Point Light is the most quintessential Maine lighthouse I've seen thus far. The lighthouse itself is a museum open to the public during the summer months, and when you stand on the ledge during high tide, it is as if you have found the edge of the world.
